Ian Dickinson & Matthew Dunster

Join long-time collaborators Ian Dickinson (Sound Designer) and Matthew Dunster (Director), for a conversation on how they have developed their unique working relationship. Ian and Matthew will share insights into what goes into building and sustaining a successful sound designer/director creative collaboration, and offer tips and advice on workflow, process, shorthands and effective communication.

ASD is pleased to be partnering with Stage Directors U.K. to present this event.

About Ian

Ian joined the Autograph design team in 2009 after a long spell working at The Royal Court Theatre where he designed the sound for over fifty shows. Prior to that Ian cut his sound teeth in Manchester under the watchful eye of Phil Clifford at The Royal Exchange Theatre.

Ian was the recipient of both an Olivier and Drama Desk Award for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night–Time, which played at the National Theatre and toured venues worldwide. He has also received Olivier and Tony nominations for his work in London and on Broadway, most notably for Company, Angels In America, Rock & Roll, and Jerusalem.

About Matthew

Matthew Dunster is a theatre and film director and writer. He was born and raised in Oldham and now lives in South East London. Previously an actor, he has directed or written over sixty shows, often with major national companies (including RSC, NT, Royal Court, Young Vic, Royal Exchange, Shakespeare’s Globe, The Bridge), as well as directing in the West End, on Broadway and internationally. He has been the Associate Director of The Young Vic and Shakespeare's Globe.

His most recent productions are 2:22 A Ghost Story which ran in the West End for 694 performances; A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the inaugural production at the new Shakespeare North Playhouse; Shirley Valentine and The Pillowman, both at The Duke Of Yorks.

Matthew has been nominated for three Olivier Awards and his Broadway production of HANGMEN was nominated for five Tony’s
